Storing seasonal clothing: how to do it right
Why storing seasonal clothing properly is important
Every year we change seasons. That means we also change clothes. But did you know that wrong storage can damage your clothes?
At Palthe, we regularly see clothes that are damaged by wrong storage. Moths, moisture and wrong packaging can all cause problems.
We want to help you keep your clothes looking good. That is why in this article we give you tips for storing seasonal clothing.
Step 1: clean everything before you store it
This is the most important rule. Never store dirty clothes.
Why? Dirt and sweat attract moths. Also, stains can get worse during storage.
Bring your seasonal clothes to the dry cleaner before you store them. At Palthe, we can professionally clean your clothes and check for small damages.
Step 2: the right way per clothing type
Suits and blazers
Hang these on wide wooden hangers. Button them up to keep the shape. Use breathable garment bags, not plastic.
Knitted sweaters
Fold sweaters and cardigans. Do not hang them, because they will stretch out. Store them flat in a drawer or box. Put acid-free paper between them.
Coats and jackets
Hang these on sturdy hangers. Make sure there is enough space so the air can circulate. Check the pockets before you store them.
Delicate fabrics
Silk, lace and beads need extra attention. Store these individually wrapped in acid-free paper. Never in plastic.
Step 3: the right place
Choose a good place to store clothes:
Good:
- Bedroom closet
- Walk-in closet with ventilation
- Climate-controlled closet
Not good:
- Basement (too damp)
- Attic (too hot or too cold)
- Garage
The ideal temperature is 18 to 21 degrees. The ideal humidity is 45 to 55 percent.
Step 4: protection against moths
Moths are the enemy of wool and cashmere. Use natural remedies:
- Cedar wood blocks in your closet
- Lavender sachets
- Moth balls
Replace these remedies each season for the best result.
Step 5: check regularly
Take time each month to check your stored clothes:
- Look for signs of moths
- Check for moisture or smell
- Rearrange clothes if needed
This way you catch problems on time.
Special attention for luxury items
Designer clothing
Keep original hangers if you can. Consider professional storage for very expensive pieces.
Wedding dresses
Bring your wedding dress to the dry cleaner for cleaning before you store it. Store in an acid-free box. Laying flat is better than hanging.
Vintage clothing
This needs extra attention. Consider museum-quality materials for storage.
